The JUG and Freeze Guard both utilize water's natural properties to circulate and help prevent freezing. Warm water rises and cool water sinks, so there is a natural rotation and exchange of water occuring in the stand pipe of the Freeze Guard and between the drinking bowl and the tank reservoir.
Both use a temperature sensitive thermostat to regulate the low wattage heating element to minimize electrical use. In a study done at Northeast Iowa Community College the JUG used just 108 Kw-hrs of electricity in a 120 period during the winter of 1993-94. (At the time, the third coldest on record.) Using a common electrical rate of 8 cents/Kw-hr...the JUG used only $8.64 for the whole year!
